📖 How to Read Long and Difficult Texts When You Don't Know All the Words Have you ever looked at a long article, a textbook chapter, or an exam reading and felt overwhelmed? There are words you do not know, sentences that seem confusing, and too much information to take in. The good news is that you do not need to understand every word. You just need to understand the main ideas. Professional readers use several strategies, and today we will look at them step by step. Start with what you can see. Before you read properly, look at the title, the headings, and any words in bold or italics. These are usually the most important ideas. Ask yourself: what is this text likely to be about? This gives you a mental map before you begin. This first step is called skimming — reading quickly to get the general picture. Then read the first and last sentences of each paragraph. In most well-written texts, the first sentence introduces the main point of the paragraph. The last sentence often summarises it or connects to the next idea. If you read only these, you will already understand the structure and the main arguments.
When you see a word you do not know, do not stop immediately. Ask yourself: do I need it to understand the main point? If the answer is no, keep reading. If the word seems important, try to guess its meaning from the context. Look at the whole sentence. Is the word positive or negative? Does it describe an action, a person, or a thing? Often you can get the general idea without a dictionary. Look for signpost words. These are words that show the direction of the text. Words like however, therefore, in contrast, as a result, firstly, and finallytell you if the author is adding an idea, changing direction, or giving a conclusion. Even if you miss some vocabulary, these words help you follow the logic. Read with a question in mind. Before you start, ask yourself: what do I need to find out? If you are reading for an exam, look at the questions first. Then search the text for answers. This is called scanning — you do not read everything, you look for specific information like names, dates, or key terms. When you find a part that seems important to you, switch to a detailed reading. Read these sentences carefully, stop and think, and reread if necessary. The secret is to read actively, not passively. Ask questions, guess meanings, and focus on the overall picture. With practice, these strategies will become automatic. You will read faster, understand more, and feel more confident with any text.
