Day 30: Marble Gods and Olive Groves of Athens 🇬🇷🏛️
March 21, 2026
Leaving the whimsical valleys of Cappadocia behind, I crossed the Aegean Sea and landed in the cradle of Western civilization — Athens. The contrast is striking once again: the strict, measured proportions of ancient marble have replaced the fanciful tuff rock formations of Turkey.
My day began with a leisurely climb up the Acropolis. I decided not to rush and to ascend at a comfortable pace, enjoying the morning coolness, the scent of pine needles, and the sun-warmed earth. And there it was — the Parthenon. Standing at the foot of this grandiose temple, its massive columns soaring into the piercingly blue Greek sky, is a completely unique awe. You literally touch stones that remember Pericles and Socrates. From the top of the hill, a stunning view opens up over the entire city, sprawling like a solid white carpet all the way to the Aegean Sea.
After descending from the Acropolis, I got lost in the labyrinth of ancient streets in the Plaka district, often called the "Neighborhood of the Gods." A surprisingly homey and relaxed atmosphere reigns here. White houses entwined with bright bougainvillea, tiny Byzantine churches, and countless family tavernas. I stopped for lunch at one of them. The owner, a colorful Greek man with a loud laugh, brought me a generous portion of authentic moussaka and homemade lemonade. We chatted a bit about life — my professional habit as an English teacher always helps me quickly find common ground with all sorts of people — and he tipped me off on a couple of secret spots without tourist crowds.
I spent the rest of the day just soaking up this unhurried Greek philosophy of "siga-siga" (slowly-slowly). I sat in the shade of sprawling olive trees, drinking ice-cold frappé coffee, and observing the leisurely life of the locals. After so many flights, time zone changes, and vivid impressions, such a calm, measured day is exactly what I needed.
